In a move to reduce child hunger, boosting school enrollment, and supporting local farmers, the Federal Government has engaged key stakeholders in revamping the National Home-Grown School Feeding Programme under the Renewed Hope Agenda.
Speaking at the strategic meeting in Abuja, the Minister of State for Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Dr. Tanko Yusuf Sununu, posited that an estimated ₦900 billion to ₦1 trillion will be needed annually to provide nutritious meals to primary school pupils in grades 1 to 3, three times a week.
“We cannot do this alone,” Dr. Sununu stated. “We need partnerships beyond government funding—private sector, international donors, and even repatriated funds must come into play.”
Reinforcing this, the National Coordinator of the National Social Investment Programme, Associate Professor Badamasi Lawal, stressed that the revamped programme goes beyond food. “It’s about improving school attendance, fighting malnutrition, empowering farmers, and energising local economies with one nutritious meal at a time,” he said.
The event also featured the unveiling of an enhanced NHGSFP platform by National Programme Manager, Dr. Princess Aderemi Adebowale.
The platform promises greater transparency, efficiency, and impact as the programme aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals.
With President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda at its heart, the upgraded school feeding scheme aims to become a national success story and a model for sustainable feeding systems across Africa.
