The convener, Benin Consultants Convention (BCC), Ogaga Omo-Ovie Esq, has asserted that, consulting is problem solving, and is different from training.
Ogaga Omo-Ovie Esq, made the statements in a leadership event organised for young leaders, consultants and entrepreneurs with the theme:" Adapt & Advance," in Benin city, Edo state.
He said solving problem brings money that Edo state is full of problems and advised them to aways ask good question that would improve their consulting business and told the participants to often network whenever they find themselves to grow and build their businesses.
"This convention is the second edition and the reason for the convention is to open Edo state and South-South to the business of consultant.
"There are lots of companies in Benin city, such as: schools, hotels, mega mail and shops. And they have staffing problems, revenue problems and consulting problems, and it takes consultant to problem solve.
" We have a short supply of consulting in the South -South, that is why we asked consultants to raise the awareness of consulting, and also to help ignite the passion for the consulting industry, he explained.
Differentiating between consulting and training, Ogaga Omo-Ovie Esq said," consulting is like a umbrella body subsumed training. Consulting is diagnosing a problem, at the same time proffering solutions to that problem.
" Why training is an intervention to solve a problem. Some people just train with diagnosing the problem, and that is why the training didn't work. So, it takes a consultant to diagnose a problem, and prepare a training plan that can solve that problem. If you don't diagnose the problem properly and you go ahead to train, you will have problems."
He said at the end of the event, he intends to see the rise of the consulting industry in Edo state. He added that, he wants to see people get awareness about consulting in the state.
Also speaking to the partakers at the event, the Chief Executive Officer, Birch Hill Consulting, Susan O. Charles, talked about the various strategies used in solving problems when firms and companies are encountering challenges.
She said one of the major strategy use is the "root cause analysis", and said most businesses struggle to succeed because the owners of such business don't focus on the root cause of the business, rather they look at the symptoms.
Susan O. Charles said business owners must first of all identified the symptoms they are experiencing, and look for the root cause that is causing those symptoms.
She said once you can dig down to the root of the problem, you can begin to fix the root cause of the problem one after the other, that by the time you have done, you find out that you have solved the problem.
Educating the participants through a practical session, Gbenga Totoyi, Partner Alan and Grant company limited, told the participants to have an idea of what they want to do before they venture into consulting business.
Totoyi advised them to engage in constant reading of books. He said reading will help them to discover new things after using himself as an example. He said he rate people based on the books they read, that what people read that determines their mind thinking.
He disclosed that, they also need to look for their competitors to enable them focus on what to do. He urged them to try and embark on traveling so that they can learn new things.
The occasion also witnessed a panel session where participants asked questions that broader on their minds.
