Humiliation: Obaseki Shares Tears, Forgives Assaulters In Edo...Says He Is Not An Enemy Of Palace
...Says He Is Not An Enemy Of Palace
Pedro Obaseki, a cousin to former Edo State governor, Godwin Obaseki, has asserted that he has forgiven those who assaulted him on December 28, 2025, at Uwa Primary School in Benin City, describing the decision as a necessary step towards unity and healing in Edo State.
While forgiving his assaulters Pedro Obaseki was seen sharing tears in a video circulating in the social media.
It would be recalled that Pedro Obaseki was reportedly attacked by a group of youths allegedly led by Osaze Adun also known as (Kapuepue) while playing football at the school.
The incident, which drew widespread condemnation, saw the 60-year-old stripped and forced to walk several kilometres to the Palace of the Oba of Benin.
Addressing a gathering at his residence in Benin City when the assailants visited to seek forgiveness, Obaseki said although the incident left him deeply traumatised, appeals from family members, community leaders, and other stakeholders influenced his decision to let go.
“Everybody is aware of the events of December 28, and it’s almost four months now. Myself and my children were deeply pained, but there is a proverb in Benin that only the leopard’s cub can lick the leopard’s underside,” he said.
He said his identity as an Edo man and a member of the Obaseki family, noted that he does not consider himself an enemy of the people or the Benin Palace.
“I wanted to use this as an affirmation that we are not enemies of the Edo people. Edo is paramount to me. I am not a polarising figure—I relate across political divides because my loyalty is first to Edo,” he stated.
Obaseki recounted the physical and emotional toll of the assault, describing how he was beaten and made to trek long distances after a football match—an ordeal he said left him ill and traumatised.
Despite this, he said the visit by his assailants and their public admission that he is not an enemy of the Palace brought him a sense of relief.
“As painful as it was, I see myself as a sacrificial figure meant to bring people together. It is to repair, not to destroy,” he added.
He, however, warned that while he has chosen to forgive, any recurrence of such acts would not be tolerated. He urged the perpetrators to formally undertake never to engage in assault or intimidation again.
Because of what happened to him Obaseki said there is a plans to establish a non-governmental organisation aimed at addressing violence, harassment, and intimidation against citizens in Edo State.
In his remarks, Adun apologised for the attack, expressing regret and assuring that such an incident would not happen again. He acknowledged that Obaseki has consistently supported the Benin cause and is not an adversary of the Palace.
The reconciliation marks a significant step in easing tensions surrounding the incident, with observers noting that Obaseki’s decision could help foster dialogue and reduce community friction in the state.
