2024 NWFL: Edo Queens Emerges  Champions

The Governor of Edo state Mr Godwin Nogheghase Obaseki and his wife Dr Mrs Betsey Obaseki have greeted victorious Edo Queens on their triumph at the Nigeria Women Football League Premiership Super Six to emerge champions for the first time in Nigeria's football history.

 Edo state governor and the First Lady called the victorious Edo Queens  after the final match at the Samson Siasia stadium in Yenagoa expressed their joy and promised to accord them a grand reception on their return from Yenagoa.

" This is good news. You girls have made us proud. As you have brought honour to your father's land,we are waiting to receive and honour you. We are really proud of your achievements this year and we will continue to encourage you.


" It is heartwarming to record this feat. it is happening for the first time in Edo state." Governor" 

According to the Executive chairman of the Edo state Sports Commission Olympian Yussuf Alli who is also elated, " The girls have made my day.

" This is happening for the first time in the history of Edo state,Edo Queens winning Nigeria women topflight league. We are proud of them.

" My joys is that the girls have really reciprocated Edo state Government's kind gesture and the huge investment in the team and sports generally. 

"At the reception the first lady organized for Edo Queens when they qualified for the Super Six,the girls promised that they were going to work extra hard to win the cup for the Governor and his wife,today it has come to reality.

"The Governor and his wife are so happy and waiting to receive the victorious team." Alli said.

It would be Emem Essien's 29 minutes goal for Edo Queens against Bayelsa Queens which the former champions  equalized in the 49th minute was enough for Edo Queens to lift the cup today in Yenagoa, Bayelsa state capital.

On the road to the finals, Edo Queens demolished Confluence Queens 5-1 to begin the title race on a bright note before going ahead to beat Heartland 3-1 and Nasarawa Amazons 1-0 to remain in contention for the cup.
