CITN Boss Urges Students to Imbibe Tax Ideas Culture
...As Edo College Emerges First In Tax Quiz Competition

The President and Chairman of Council, Chartered Institute of Taxation Nigeria (CITN) Barr. Samuel Agbeluyi, mni, FCTI, has asserted that taxation is the life wire of any nation, stressed that, there is no clime that can experience any meaningful development without an effective, efficient and consistent inflow of tax revenue.
CITN President made the assertion during tax quiz entitled:" Catch-Them-Young Tax Quiz Competition," organized for all secondary schools, in Edo state, said CITN is committed to investing in the future of tax professionalism in Nigeria.
" My sincere appreciation to the sponsors of this event – The NNPC and Edo State Board of Internal Revenue for being committed to developing future tax professionals.
" I also celebrate the innovative thinking of the Student Affairs Committee of the CITN, under the Chairmanship of, Dr. Ruth Abiola Adimula, FCTI. The success of today’s event is plausible, only through your resilience.
"Turning to the future, I am excited by the potentials of the next generation of tax professionals. The level of knowledge being displayed by the younger generation on taxation speaks profoundly of the caliber of tax professionals that will emerge in the near future.
"As you know, taxation is arguably the life wire of any nation. In fact, there is no clime that can experience any meaningful development without an effective, efficient and consistent inflow of tax revenue.
"In view of the critical nature of taxation, opportunities abound for each student in this hall to become a tax professional which will qualify you to either practice taxation, work with tax authorities or related departments in both formal and informal sectors or even become an authority in the field of taxation and related studies.
"This Tax quiz event is in no doubt a great medium for grooming the brightest minds who will revolutionalize the future of taxation in Nigeria.
" We will be enjoying the intellectually stimulating display of knowledge in taxation by these students.
" I am optimistic that the process will be fair, transparent and produce only the best as the winners.As an Institute, CITN is committed to investing in the future of tax professionalism in Nigeria," he stressed
In her opening remark, Dr. Adimula,Esq., FCTl, Chairman, Students Affairs and Tertiary Institution Relations Committee CITN, represented Imagine Usunobin Victor, Vice Chairman to Dr. Adimula Abiola Ruth, said
the main core of organizing tax quiz competition for students is to create an interactive atmosphere for students to share ideas and contribute positively to the economic development of Nigeria.
She said the essence is to introduce the students to building a career in taxation, and other related areas of study.
She said "The core objectives of CITN in organizing this event are to enlighten the students understanding of the role of tax in the development of an economy, create an interactive atmosphere for students to share ideas and contribute positively to the economic development of the country.
" To develop spirit of sportsmanship by competing positively in schools quiz and educative competitions, introduce students to building a career in taxation and other related areas of study,
location of excellent performance for rewards.
" CITN is doing a lot of investment on students both at secondary schools and tertiary institutions levels, because we believe in enhancing their resourcefulness as the future of the Institute.
" In tertiary institutions, much sensitization and awareness creation is going on and membership of Association of Nigerian Taxation Students (ANTAS) in tertiary institutions are progressing by the day.
"We have 32 tertiary institutions in Nigeria that have inaugurated tax club/associations, 31 Institutions have commenced Taxation program while 39 institutions are offering Taxation as a unit course.
" It's a known fact that the national income on oil and gas is dwindling in Nigeria and Taxation is taking the centre stage."
She equally called on the Federal Ministry of Education and Federal Inland Revenue Service to work hand-in-hand with CITN towards making Taxation a subject of study in secondary schools, whereby at a very early stage students are trained on the subject.
Dr Adimula explained that, CITN has huge professional resourcefulness and its ready to prepare and make available the required curriculum up to SS3, to study for internal and external examinations with JAMB, WASCE and NECO.
"These students will in turn field the tertiary institutions offering taxation with candidates for admissions. Prior, CITN has started discussions with these two federal bodies and we are happy to continue the engagement till implementation.
" The mutual civic responsibilities of all citizens in paying their taxes and government to provide infrastructural facilities cannot be overemphasized.
" The earlier this is incorporated into the consciousness of the young minds the better for the nation.
" I see these brilliant students as the future of CITN and major stakeholders of Nigeria’s future economic development and this is the time to invest in them," Dr. Adimula added.
At the beginning of the tax quiz competition, a total of ten school participated, the schools are; ltohan Girls Grammar School, St. Maria Goretti Girls Grammar School, Western Boys High School, Asoro Grammar School.
Others are; Egor Secondary School, Eyean Secondary School, Army Day Secondary School, Isihor, Ugiomon Secondary School, Niger College and Edo College.
After the final of the quiz, Izoduwa O. Richking of Edo College emerged first, with #200,000. Igbinomwanhia Bridget of St. Maria Goretti Girls Grammar School, (first runner) emerged second to win #150,000, and Uwoghiren O. Blessed of Eyean Secondary School, emerged third,( second runner), with #100,000.
Given his closing remark, Executive member, Benin and District Society and Vice Chairman, CITN, Barr. Ahonsi, FCTI, thanked all the students who participated in the quiz.
He said they all have really done well and also thanked Edo Board Internal Revenue and all his colleagues and Edo state government.
