Edo Govt Doles Out N50M On NWFL Champions, Edo Queens

It was a triumphant entry with pump and celebration for the reigning Nigeria Women Football League Premiership champions Edo Queens in Benin City as Edo state Government received the victorious team back home in style on Thursday,May 30,2024.

The homecoming red carpet reception is in fulfillment of Governor Godwin Obaseki's promises to reward hard work and excellence, geared towards making Edo state great again in all spheres.

The reception began at the Western Boys High School on Ikpoba Hill as scheduled with the First Lady of Edo State Dr. Mrs Betsy Obaseki and the Executive Chairman of Edo state Sports Commission Olypian Yussuf Alli on ground to welcome the champions back home, leading a roadshow through some major roads, including Akpakpava Road through the King Square, Stadium Road,Akezua and Airport Road to Government House in GRA where the Governor personally received the team amidst cheers.

Without much ado,Governor Godwin Obaseki who said he was elated and fulfilled by the historic achievement of Edo Queens winning the number one position in the women league in Nigeria immediately announced a million naira reward for each player in the fourty man team;N5M for the coaches and another N5M for the rest team officials. The Supporters club were not left out in the largese as N2.5M also reached them.

Governor Obaseki who said that he was fulfilled that his administration's investment in the club has yielded bumper harvest also revealed that he has ordered an upward review of the players' and officials' remuneration as part of his appreciation and motivation for the team and as a catalyst for others to strive for excellence.

In his address at the red-carpet reception in Government House, the governor while showering praise on the victorious Edo Queens, also charged the team to remain focused and to develope winning mentality as real champions. He urged them to work towards retaining the cup next year while assuring them that the next administration will continue with the support." I want you people to assure me that you will win this cup again next year so that the next Governor can invite me to be a part of the celebration". He enthusiastically said.

Edo Queens emerged champions of NWFL premiership last Sunday in Yenagoa Bayelsa State after a successful NWFL Super Six outing. The Edo state owned team are winners of the prestigious league title for the first time in the history of Nigerian football.

Meanwhile,the Governor of Edo state Mr Godwin Obaseki has heaped praise on the Chairman,Edo state Sports Commission Olympian Yussuf Alli, describing him as a decent and trustworthy sports administrator with a proven strong character of financial discipline. " I don't waste time in giving approvals to his memos and request because I know he is not going to steal the money. And I will always consider his request promptly because I trust him." He said.

Also speaking,the Chief of Staff to the Government Dr Osaigbovo Iyoha while also congratulating the victorious Edo Queens commended the Bendel Insurance Supporters Club for their solidarity for Edo Queens. He reassured them that the Governor has long given approval to their request for a traveling Bus and that of Bendel Insurance FC. He revealed that the Government has procured the two buses and that they will soon be called to get the keys. #
