Edo NUJ To Marks World Press Freedom Day

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Edo State Council, will on Friday May 3, 2024, mark the World Press Freedom Day, a day set aside to "Celebrate the Fundamental Principles of Press Freedom."

Venue is the NUJ Secretariat, No 1 Sir Gabriel Igbinedion Way, GRA, Benin City, beginning at 10am.

The day is geared to assess the state of press freedom globally; defend the media from attacks on their independence and pay tribute to journalists who have lost their lives in the line of duty.

The theme for this year's event is, *A Press for the Planet: Journalism in the face of the environmental crisis.*

Areas of focus would be on the significant role played by the press, journalism access, and dissemination of reliable information to ensure and secure a sustainable future that respects the rights of individuals and their diversity of voices as well as gender equality.

As a forerunner to the main event, there will be a "Freedom Walk" through some adjoining streets to sensitize the people on the role of journalists. Take off point is at the NUJ Secretariat by 7:30 am.

T-shirts and baseball caps would be distributed to participants on a first-come, first-serve basis.
