RoLAC Trains Journalists On How To Report Issue Of Disability, Women Others

In a bid to include the vulnerable persons in the society, the CSO, Media, NGO and government ministries and agencies have organized a one day training for media practitioners on how to report issue of persons living with disability in Edo state.
Declaring the event open, at the NUJ Secretariat, Benin city, the Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Comrade Festus Alenkhe, said the engagement programme will continue to take place by involve non governmental bodies for the training.
Comrade Alenkhe also ensure that information discuss at the forum will be pass to the general public to enable the people know what is happening.
He therefore thanked the various representative leaders for availing themselves for the occasion.
The event which was tittled:" Civil Society Advocacy and Media Publicity about Existing Justice Response and Legal Aid Channels," aimed to raise awareness among vulnerable populations, and the general public about existing Justice response mechanisms, legal aid channels, counselling services, SARC, and shelters available in Edo state.
Given her speech, the Chairperson Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities (JONAPWD) Edo state, Ann Ojugo, lamented access to public spaces, transportation and building remains a persistent plight for persons with disabilities.
Ojugo also listed social stigma and discrimination, educational problems, employment disparities, healthcare disparities, technological gap, mental health issue and financial strains, as some of the problems ravaging the association.
" Despite legislative efforts to promote inclusive education, barriers persist within educational institutions.
" Inaccessible facilities, a lack of appropriate accommodation, and a shortage of trained educators contribute to the academic challenges faced by students with disabilities.
" Access to quality healthcare can be compromised for persons with disabilities. Discrimination, inaccessible workplace and lack of accessible information," she added.
In her remarks, Edo state Commissioner of Ministry of Social Development and Gender issues,represented by Mrs Irenonsen Ihensekhien, a Director Gender Issues, said the aims of the programme is to discuss issue related to children, women and persons living with disabilities.
She disclosed that, case of children, women and people living with disability is very dare to the Edo state government and thanked the NUJ chairman for providing a platform for the event to hold.
RoLAC State Project Coordinator, Uchenna NWokedi, said a total of 1,581 cases have been attended to in GDB.
She posited that, RoLAC work with different thematic areas to achieve their purpose.
Nwokedi disclosed that their aim is to seek the support of all stakeholders to enable RoLAC raise awareness about children, women and persons living with disabilities.
She asserted that, they also talk on issue of gender based violences by creating enlightenment and awareness for members of the public.
