Tom Obaseki Restates Commitment To Promoting Boxing In Edo 

...As NGOs Raise Cancer Awareness Campaigns Using Sports


As boxing extravaganza and campaign against cancer disease take center stage in Benin city, the Executive chairman,Oredo Local Government Council Dr Tom Obaseki has restated his administration's commitment to sports development with special interest in the promotion of boxing to an enviable height in Edo state. 

The Oredo Council boss made the commitment in his remarks during a press briefing on awareness campaign against cancer in Benin on Friday, June 21,2024.

The events sponsored by Oredo Local Government Council.is being organized 
by Non Governmental Organizations LIFT ABOVE CANCER and Cancel Cancer Africa.



Dr Obaseki  commended  the state government for creating an enabling environment for sports to thrive in Edo State just as he thumbed up for the Executive Chairman of Edo State Sports Commission Olympian Yussuf Alli for his support so far in the area of collaboration for grassroots sports development in Edo State.

 He also commended the organizers of the event and re-echoed his support for the campaign, noting that a lot of people are dying silently as a result of late diagnosis and treatment of the deadly disease.

"We are very happy that this initiative is starting in our state. Cancel Cancer Africa organizing the campaign is a credible organization which has been in existence for over 10 years, doing great work in Kenya and other parts of Africa.

We want to support the initiative and we are creating cancer awareness in a different perspective,trying to use sports and entertainment as tools for the campaigns.We want to build talent. "

" In all,we must give credit to the Governor of Edo State Mr Godwin Obaseki for deeming it necessary to put a full fledged Sports Commission in place in Edo State. We also commend our ever ready chairman of the Sports Commission Olympian Yussuf Alli who has been very supportive. I want to appreciate him."

" Tomorrow, people will be seeing something different as we will be creating awareness using comedy, fashion, sports to push a case;to create awareness that cancer is not a death sentence or spiritual ailment. That cancer is treatable and preventable. I am happy that we are using sports where we have talents. I want to commend the organizers for also supporting our initiative by anchoring this campaign on boxing. We want to re-invent boxing in Edo state. Our first medals at international sports championships came from Boxing. Edo is the center of boxing in Africa and we want to bring back the glorious days in boxing in Edo State." He said.

Briefing the press,the Spokesman for the Organizations Mr Ronnie Jacobs said that the event which is scheduled to begin on Saturday with the theme 'Ring of Hope” will feature a  roadshow with the final event, boxing taking place at 3PM onJune 22nd at the Sir Victor Uwaifo Creative Hub.

According to him,people particularly the youth will be encouraged to work on their mental and emotional health in the process.  "Many cancer patients in Nigeria deal with a lot of stress and anxiety alongside their physical symptoms."

He encouraged the sufferers, saying '"together, we can help make a difference to the lives of so many and stamp out the needless shame surrounding cancer. " 
We want to use sports, entertainment to create awareness about cancer in Edo State, collaborating with Oredo Government and Edo Sports Commission."Ronnie said.

The organizers of the events who specifically, chose boxing to feature in the campaigns said that the one day bout will bring athletes from about ten states including Delta, Lagos, Osun, Oyo,Ebonyin and others together in Benin for the boxing extravaganza at the Sir Victor Uwaifo Creative Hub on Saturday, June 22,2024. He added that there are attractive prizes to be won.#
