Enugu Police Arrest Man Who Allegedly Killed Mother, Grandma, Sister, Nephew For Money Ritual

The Enugu State Police Command has arrested a young man from Amaeze, Nsukka, for allegedly poisoning and killing his mother, grandmother, sister, and nephew in a chilling attempt to perform a money ritual known as "Okeite." The incident, which reportedly occurred in September 2024, has sent shockwaves across the region, exposing the horrors of ritualistic practices rooted in superstition.

According to reports, the suspect was apprehended by a mob that paraded him through the community, forcing him to the graves of his victims to beg for forgiveness. He was later handed over to the police for further investigation.

Reacting to the incident, the Advocacy for Alleged Witches (AfAW) issued a statement on Thursday, condemning the killings and calling on the Nigeria Police Force to bring all culprits to justice. Dr. Leo Igwe, Director of AfAW, emphasized the need to investigate not just the suspect but also the native doctor and others implicated in the crime.

“This young man did not act alone. Some people lured him into committing this atrocity. The police should arrest and investigate the so-called native doctor and all who were implicated in this crime,” Igwe stated.

AfAW described the Okeite ritual as a scam carried out by fraudulent native doctors to extort money from gullible individuals with promises of wealth. Victims are often instructed to commit heinous acts, including murder, to achieve supposed success.

A Facebook post by Sen Chijinkem Ugwuanyi alleged that the suspect was introduced to the Okeite ritual by a friend who took him to a native doctor in Agbani, Nsukka.

Following the native doctor's instructions, the suspect poisoned a meal meant for his mother, which was also consumed by his grandmother, sister, and a visiting child, resulting in their deaths. A 9-year-old child survived the ordeal and is currently receiving care.

AfAW has pledged to work with local authorities to ensure a thorough investigation and support for the surviving child. The organization also reiterated its call for the public to abandon beliefs in money rituals, labeling them as baseless and harmful.

“Human or ritual sacrifice cannot make anybody rich or successful as popularly believed. As this case shows, the belief predisposes ritual money seekers to exploitation and motivates them to commit atrocities,” AfAW said.

The Enugu State Police Command confirmed that the suspect is in custody at the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and assured the public that all involved parties would face justice.

This tragic incident highlights the dangers of superstitious beliefs and the urgent need for societal reorientation toward evidence-based practices and lawful means of achieving success. AfAW continues to advocate for enlightenment campaigns to combat destructive practices like Okeite.
