Stakeholders Advocate Against Consumption Of Chemical Foods In Edo

The National Orientation Agency (NOA) has called on Nigerians to be mindful of consuming chemical preservative in foodstuffs to avoid deadly diseases.


Disclosing the information,  NOA State Director, Edo State Directorate, Barr. Osahon B. Woghiren, said the use of dangerous chemicals in food preservation posed significant health and safety risk to consumers.


Barr. Osahon  Woghiren made the the statements in a town hall meeting with stakeholders on public enlightenment campaign against the use of dangerous chemicals in the preservation of foodstuffs in Benin city, Edo state.

He said dangerous chemicals in food preservation is seen as unapproved preservatives, such as chemicals like formalin, boric acid and others.

The NOA boss said, if you go to our various markets people who are selling different products are using dangerous chemicals in preserving foodstuffs, which called for a great concern to them.



"The use of dangerous chemicals in food preservation posses significant health and safety risks to the consumers. This event is timely, timely in the same that if you go to the market now sellers are using dangerous chemicals in preserving foodstuffs.

" All these are what we are discouraging and I assure you that we are going to take this workshop to the grassroots. We are going to pay an advocacy visit to every other person involved in this case," he added.

He explained that approved preservative chemicals like nitrates and sulfite can become dangerous if used in excessive amounts.

Mr. Woghiren called on government for regulatory actions to enforce strict laws to ban the use of hazardous chemicals in food preservation.

He also advocated for regular inspection of markets, food processing facilities and storage units.


 

The State Coordinator of National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control NAFDAC, Mrs. Esther Itua who was represented by a director in the agency, Mrs. Ann Olotun cautioned Nigerians on consuming preservative products without fore-knowledge of the chemicals.

Olotun said their team regularly visit the market and discovered foodstuffs preserved with chemicals are much in the market She said such food caused kidney failure, liver damage , cancer and other dangerous diseases.

She said that is why many of our products are being rejected in the international markets and advised traders to preserve their products in accordance with NAFDAC prescription for safe consumption.

    

The Permanent Secretary, Edo State Ministry of Information, Dr. Desmond Agbama explained that the ministry has rolled out plans for 2025 aggressive Campaign against harmful chemicals in preserving foodstuff and called for the inclusion of consumption of dangerous chemicals in the curriculum from primary to tertiary institutions across the country.

Dr. Agbama said the issue they are treating is a very serious one which he said many of them had experience in the market. He said the people should be educated about the consumption of chemical food.

He said we must think of various societal ills affecting us  on how to put it into our school curriculum to enable our children know the danger of it.

In his remarks, Hon. Commissioner, Public Complaint Commission, Austine Aigbavba, appealed to the media to help to spread the news to the general public especially people living in the grassroots.

     

The event was well attended by security agents, Joint Admission and Matriculation Board, JAMB, the media, the police, Nigerian Correctional service, Civil Society Organisations and other stakeholders.
