Edo Policymaker Trains 500 Youths On How To Make Shoe, Bag

Iduozee Efe Paul Benin

The senator representing the Edo South senatorial district, Senator Neda Imasuen, yesterday, trained 500 youths on skill acquisitions to boost the state's Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

The skill acquisitions which centre on shoe making and leather bags, were meant for residents of the Edo South senatorial district.

Addressing the participants, in Benin, Senator Imasuen said that there is a lot of money in shoes and bag making, therefore they should take the training seriously and be economically self-sufficient.

"The shoes that I wear is made by someone and I will not mention his name, but it's made by somebody from Enugu state. As a matter of fact, apart from this hat that I am not sure I know where it comes from, the rest of everything I am wearing here is made in Nigeria.

"And so, Nigerians are making a lot of money from this.

"And I recall that when I go abroad and I wear my shoes, my friends always want to take my shoes. And I we always remind them, these shoes were not made in the US.

"It was made in Nigeria and they are amazed that such quality shoes are made in Nigeria. So I'm going to plead with you. I'm going to enjoin you, so please, take this training very seriously because you might never know where it is going to lead you.

"This might just put you over the edge and make you a millionaire. It is just for you to be focused. It is just for you to set your mind at it. It is just for you to be resolute about it.

"And at the end of the day, you will be the beneficiary of it. So as we start this programme, I am not going to speak too long because it is not the speech making event. It's a practical event of shoemaking", Imasuen said.

In his remarks, the facilitator of the event, Hua Terkure Alex, a Senior Management Development Officer, from Centre for Management Development, Abuja, said, they are here to regulate training across the country and beyond.

He said the training  happens to be one of their core supervision and to evaluate.

He said," I am one of the resource person they brought for the shoe  and the bag making. The theory part of it was very wonderful. You know, we just did theory today. Tomorrow they are going to continue with the practical.

"So is give and take, it's a wonderful good initiative. The participants are very happy and we just have to give kudos to the honorable senator.

"The trainees are 500,  it's not everybody that will scale through. We're going to streamline it to 200. There are parameters we're going to use at the end of this training.

" So, until we'll get there before I'll tell you which parameter we're going to use.  I know the selection is going to be very stiff because every participant is ready. And you can see from the engagement in questions and answers from the facilitators, but we are going to streamline it.

"This is the first batch. But you can see with humans, everybody wants to be on the first batch. So we are going to face a challenge, but we are going to do our best."

One of the beneficiaries, Mr. Uyi Obazee, thanked the Senator Imasuen for the training noting that at the end of the exercise, he would be able to take care of his family.
