Edo Policymakers Visit Sports Commission On Oversight Function

As part of the legislative oversight function, members of the Edo State House of Assembly on Tuesday, April 29,2025 visited the Edo State Sports Commission and assured the Executive Chairman Hon. Amadin Desmond Enabulele and his board of close interactions and support to enable the commission achieve it's mandate of taking sports to the next level in the state.

The lawmakers, led by their Chairman, House Committee on Sports, Hon. Donald Ojemeh Okogbe Esq., having beien conducted round during their tour of facilities at the Samuel Ogbemudia stadium complex by Hon Amadin Enabulele led board, commended the sports commission boss and his board for their efforts so far since assumption of office about four months ago and promised prompt legislative intervention.

According to the chairman House Committee on Sports,Barr Donald Ojemeh Okogbe, the Edo state Sports Commission Chairman and his board need help in the area of infrastructure maintenance, insisting that some gaps  they have observed needs to be bridged to ensure prompt response and solutions to any issues capable of slowing down the progress of the commission executive.

 “ The Sports Commission Board is a part of the state Executive Arm and it is our duty to carry out our oversight function to ensure checks and balances.

“We have come to see how well the Commission is achieving its mandate. As a legislature, we hold a responsibility to ensure checks and balances,. Also,we are ready to bridge gaps where necessary.”

“We will do our best to reach Mr. Governor with recommendations to boost funding and support for the Commission. We must also encourage private sector participation.”

“I urge all well-meaning individuals, philanthropists, and corporate organisations to join hands with the Sports Commission. Sports development is a shared responsibility.”

 "The area that needs urgent attention as we have observed,is maintenance of facilities and from our interactions with the chairman and his board,they really need help. We have been briefed by the board on their activities and we are aware that the maintenance agency or company Peculiar Ultimate Concerns Ltd is out of contract. That is where we want to come in and support the Commission by way of legislative intervention on how to fix things quickly.

The issues are not really with the Sports Commission board. It was a part of the liabilities they inherited but we are ready to help them out so that we do not end up spending too much later if the necessary backing is not given the Sports Commission Executive now to enable them function properly." He emphasized.

Speaking, the Executive Chairman of the Edo state Sports Commission expressed his appreciation for the honourable members visit and their support.

He said that his board is ever ready to work as they are already working on alternative means of addressing the issues in infrastructure maintenance as the contract between the maintenance agency
Peculiar Ultimate Concerns Ltd has expired.

" The company have come to discuss with us on possible renewal of contract and they are willing to stay but we have to go through the process and see the possibility of working with them."

 He highlighted some of the achievements of his board  to include  restructuring of the management of Bendel Insurance and Edo Queens." We fortified both squads, and today Insurance has moved out of the relegation zone, while Edo Queens are soaring
in the Nigeria Women Football League. We are pushing to qualify both teams for continental competitions.”

Hon Enabulele revealed plans to launch the Governor’s Cup, a grassroots sports competition to encourage community participation in his bid to enforce catch them young approach.

He also outlined the Commission’s broader vision which is to drive the resurgence of sports in Edo State. We are bringing back the School Sports Festival, the Ogbe Hard Court Tennis Tournament, and other events to promote both sports and tourism.”. He emphasized.  #
