The leadership of the Nigeria Union of Journalists(NUJ) Edo State Council has urged its members “to exhibit a higher level of commitment to the ideals of professional ethics.

A statement by the Council leadership endorsed by its Chairman, Dr. Festus Alenkhe and its Secretary, Comrade Andy Egbon in commemoration of the 2025 World Press Freedom Day(3rd May), said: “This annual observance offers a moment for reflection, renewal, and recommitment to the sacred duty of journalists in upholding truth, defending democracy, and advancing the rights and welfare of the people.

“As we honour this day, we salute the bravery, resilience, and dedication of journalists in Edo State and across Nigeria who, despite numerous constraints, continue to inform, educate, entertain and serve the public with integrity.

“In an era defined by complex political and social challenges, our role as journalists have never been more vital, or more tested. We reaffirm that journalists can only truly give their best when they are provided with the right atmosphere to operate, an environment free from intimidation, censorship, harassment, or fear. A free and secured press is not a luxury, but a necessity for development and democracy.”

Going further they called on all journalists in Edo State to exhibit “a higher level of commitment to the ideals of professional ethics,” adding “our duty to truth, accuracy, objectivity, and responsibility must remain uncompromised, even in the face of adversity. The fight against misinformation, fake news, and unethical reporting begins with us.

“In the same vein, we encourage journalists to support the Edo State Government in its efforts to reposition the state for growth and progress. While holding those in  power to  effective  accountability, the media must also serve as a constructive partner in the development process, highlighting positive strides and offering solutions-oriented reportage.”

According to the duo, “the leadership of the NUJ, Edo State Council remains steadfast in its commitment to promoting discipline, professionalism and unity within the profession. Even in the face of daunting challenges, we shall continue to advocate for press freedom, improved welfare and the protection of journalists’ rights.”
