Nigeria Patriots Call For A New Constitution For True Federalism

The Edo state representative of the Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF) Committee, South South position on true federalism, Prof. Yinka Omorogbe, SAN, said what they are trying to do is to see how they can come out with a new federal constitution that would address the current Nigeria challenges.


Prof. Omorogbe made the statements at PANDEF Edo stakeholders workshop/meeting on the South South position on true Federalism, Benin city, Edo state, said they decided to call for a new constitution because the old constitution is outdated and is no longer working.


She asserted," What we are trying to do is to field into a process that has being spearheaded by the patriots. Patriots are distinguished eminents Nigerians, who believe in a better Nigeria.

" They have called for a new constitution because it's obvious that this old constitution has nothing to declare. Is a turn down military constitution that was giving to us and has prove to us that is totally unworkable in every sense.

" So, they are trying to start the process that would be driven from the button by getting a referendum and stakeholders to come and discuss different aspects about it .


" This is being driven by PANDEF, which is fielding into the patriots save. PANDEF is driving the South South position , and we are part of South South in Edo state. This is just a meeting to decide and state whether we're in agreement with the PANDEF position on what to do with the new constitution."

Also, Chairman Edo State PANDEF, Prof. Alfred Ehigiegba, said the forum is made up of South South oil producing states. He said as minority states they have to make their voice heard to the federal government so that the problems affecting Niger Delta will be solved.

Prof. Ehigiegba added that, the stakeholders meeting is a meeting whereby different professional bodies come together to speak on vital issues and arrive at decision they will take forward to the patriots. 

According to the Chairman Nigeria Medical Association (NMA), Dr. Eustace Oseghale, said," we intend to move the country forward with constitutional amendment. There has to be some change in our constitution.

" There are some things that are not right in the constitution and there are some things we have to change in the constitution that is what the discussion was about. I hope we would take this to the next step as we have be agreed and the country will be better for it."

The Executive Director, Network for the Advancement of People With Visible Disabilities (NAPVID), Edo State chapter, Melody Omosah Esq, recommended that our leaders should be hold accountable by way of providing the dividends of democracy to the people according to their manifestos.

National Financial Secretary, PANDEF, Engr. E. Igbinaduwa, said at the end of the stakeholders meeting a communique will be issued and that is what they will transmit and make public at the end of the event.

For CSO representative, the Executive Director, Indomitable Youths Organisation, Dr. Bright Oniovokukor, said what Nigeria need now is a new constitution that would solve the problems affecting the entire country.

Christian representative at the event, Bishop Dr. Nosa Nosayaba, Bishop, Diocese of Edo and Delta Methodist Church, said everything they have discussed is good but, the implementation also matter to fast track the speeding of the new constitution.

Representative of the traditional ruler, HRH Osagiedo Festus, Enogie of Iguogie and the coordinator of Enigie in Edo South, said every discussion related to true federalism will be reflected in the minds of the people.

However, the meeting geared towards harnessing ideas towards the drafting of a new constitution by some eminent Nigerians.
