Govt Aide seeks protection over threat to life, goes into hiding after publishing fact

Special Advisor on Civic and Inter-Governmental Engagement, to the  Oyo State government, Eghaghe  Oghogho Junior,has fled the country to unknown destination after facing severe political persecution and multiple assassination attempts on his life in Nigeria. 

A statement by the President National Movement For Progressive Change (MPC) Comrade Uyioghosa Nosakhare Okundia, tagged: Open Letter To The International Community And Nigerian Authorities Re: Coordinated Threats Against Eghaghe Oghogho Junior,Special Adviser, on Civic and Inter-Governmental Engagement,Ibadan North Local Government and made available to Journalists in the state, said his troubles started years ago, when Oghogho Junior, authored a damning investigative report that exposed a widespread illegal mining activities in both Oyo State and across Nigeria. 

This report laid bare the operations of corrupt syndicates, complicit officials and foreign collaborators draining our land of its mineral wealth while inflicting environmental damage, fueling insecurity, and robbing local communities of their future.

The statement said rather than being honoured for his bravery, Mr. Oghogho Junior ,is now being hunted.

Continue: Since the release of his report, there have been multiple attempts on his life, and more disturbingly, his family has become a primary target. Unknown gunmen, suspected to be working on behalf of these criminal networks, have been trailing them from house to house. Each time the family relocates in search of safety, these assailants show up, asking questions and clearly intending to silence him permanently.

According to the statement "At this point, his continued stay in Nigeria is a threat to his life. The institutions that should protect him have failed or are themselves compromised. His safety cannot be guaranteed anywhere within the country. This is not just a threat against one man it is a direct attack on freedom of expression, accountability, and democracy in Nigeria.

Therefore, I write to:Expose the ongoing plan to eliminate Mr. Eghaghe Oghogho Junior by actors threatened by his past disclosures; call upon the international community, embassies, human rights organizations, and asylum-providing countries to intervene urgently and offer Eghaghe Oghogho Junior, refuge in a safe country;
advise Mr. Oghogho Junior, to immediately seek relocation to an undisclosed location, preferably outside Nigeria, for his safety and that of his family;

Moreso, appeal to all Nigerians and lovers of truth not to remain silent while honest men are being hunted for protecting our future.

The statement further said, "we cannot watch in silence while a man who stood for justice is buried by the very evil he exposed. We cannot let our country die in the hands of the corrupt. If we allow them to kill him, we send a message that truth is treason in Nigeria. That must never be our legacy.

"I hope the world is watching. And I pray that those with the power to act will do so before it is too late",
