Benin-Owena River Basin Development Authority Marks 100 Days in Office with Key Projects
The Benin-Owena River Basin Development Authority (BORBDA) has marked its first 100 days under new leadership with the commissioning of critical infrastructure projects across its host communities.
At the event, the Deputy Governor of Edo State, His Excellency, Rt. Hon. Dennis Idahosa, commended the Managing Director of BORBDA, Hon. (Dr.) Olufemi Samuel Adekanmbi, and his team for delivering tangible projects within a short period of assumption of office.
Speaking on behalf of the Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, the Deputy Governor described the milestone as unprecedented in the history of the Authority. He noted that, for the first time, host communities are directly benefiting from the institution’s interventions.
He said: *“On behalf of the Governor of Edo State, I appreciate all you are doing for the host communities. You are representing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu very well in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda. Extending CSR to this community shows true leadership. From inception, these communities had never enjoyed such benefits from this Authority, and we urge you to sustain it.”*
The projects commissioned include five solar-powered boreholes, a police post and lodge, and agricultural initiatives such as a cassava and maize farm in Owena.
The boreholes, located in Obayantor, Ekosa, Owanoba, Agbonmoba, and Iyanomi, are expected to improve access to clean water and support agricultural activities. The new police post and lodge in Obayantor aim to strengthen security in the area, while Hilux vehicles were also donated to security agencies to boost operations.
In the agricultural sector, BORBDA has commenced the cultivation of cassava and maize at Owena to enhance food production and empower local farmers.
Outlining future plans, Dr. Adekanmbi revealed that the Authority will launch initiatives to equip young Nigerians with practical and business-oriented agricultural training. He added that BORBDA is finalizing partnerships with the National Directorate of Employment (NDE) and the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) to expand agricultural development.
He further disclosed that the Authority will work with agricultural research institutes to promote climate-resilient crops and adaptive farming techniques, while also developing a framework for the sustainable management of surface and underground water resources.
Dr. Adekanmbi emphasized that BORBDA’s operations will continue to be guided by transparency, accountability, efficiency, environmental sustainability, and compliance with the law. He assured that the Authority is being repositioned to fulfill its mandate and deliver meaningful impact in its host communities.
