Edo State Government Should Act Urgently Against The Use Of Calcium Carbide To Ripen Fruits
By George Omobude
The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) recently issued a stern warning to Nigerians on the health dangers associated with consuming fruits ripened with calcium carbide. Despite this warning, reports indicate that nearly 90% of the fruits consumed in Edo State are still ripened using this dangerous chemical.
Calcium carbide is an industrial chemical that is not meant for human consumption. When used to ripen fruits like bananas, mangoes, and plantains, it releases acetylene gas, which contains harmful impurities such as arsenic and phosphorus. Long-term consumption of such fruits can lead to severe health issues including cancer, kidney failure, and neurological disorders.
Given the grave health risks, it is imperative for the Edo State Government, through the Ministry of Health, to take immediate and decisive action. A dedicated Task Force Against Artificial Fruit Ripening should be established. This task force should be empowered to:
1. Investigate markets and farms where the use of calcium carbide is suspected.
2. Seize and destroy fruits confirmed to be ripened with the chemical.
3. Arrest and prosecute offenders who endanger public health for personal gain.
4. Sensitize the public on how to identify naturally ripened fruits and report suspicious activities.
5. Collaborate with other relevant agencies such as NAFDAC, the FCCPC, and local governments for effective enforcement.
Protecting the health of citizens must be a top priority. The current situation, where the vast majority of fruits in the state are chemically ripened, is not just a health emergency, it is a public safety crisis. Without swift government intervention, countless lives will remain at risk.
The time to act is now. The Edo State Government must rise to the occasion, enforce food safety regulations, and ensure that the fruits consumed by its people are not silent killers.
