The Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of Benin-Owena River Basin Development Authority
(BORBDA), Dr. Olufemi Samuel Adekanmbi, has asserted that, no meaningful agricultural activity can take place without security.
Dr Olufemi Adekanmbi, stated this at a press briefing held at the headquarters of the authority in Obayantor, Benin, Edo State, as part of the programmes marking the management's 100 days in office.
According to him, said upon assuming office his team and him identified other plights such as; high cost and limited access to farm inputs and equipment; inadequate irrigation infrastructures; piecemeal and unreliable funding.
He also mentioned ageing farming population; harsh weather patterns driven by climate change, and vital post harvest losses.
Adekanmbi explained that the first assignment the management embarked on was to engage security agencies so that its agriculture programmes can get meaningful impact as the farms needed security to thrive.
" When we came to office. We identified security as a major challenge. Myself and the management sat down and said we must focus on security, which we did.
"Management is about leadership, when the leader provides the right leadership style everybody will move along. I want to use this opportunity to thank all the staff for their support," he said.
He posited that the authority would continue to support productivity in its farms by providing improved seedlings, organic fertilizers and essential operational tools. He added that the authority was scaling up efforts to rehabilitate and expand irrigation infrastructure to enable all year round farming.
The projects commissioned include five solar powered boreholes and overhead infrastructures in various host communities.
More so, the authority commissioned a police post and lodge in Obayantor, Edo Area Water Factory in Auchi, Iyamero farmland (Cassava and maize farm at Owena) and water projects in Ekiti State. They also donated Hilux trucks to enhance security.
Adekanmbi said that the boreholes
are situated in Obayantor, Ekosa, Owanoba, Agbonmoba and Iyanomi which are all host communities of BORBDA.
"In response to the challenge of an ageing farming population, we are set to launch the Youth-in-Agriculture Initiative to equip young Nigerians with hand-on and business oriented agricultural training.
"We are currently finalising strategic partnership with the National Directorate of Employment and the National Youth Service Corp while welcoming collaboration with non-governmental organisations and development partners.
" We are also engaging agricultural research institutes to develop and promote climate-resilient crops varieties and adaptive farming techniques," he stressed.
Adekanmbi said the authority has initiated a comprehensive assessment of dams irrigation, canals and drainage systems, noting that BORBDA is currently developing a frame work for the integrated and sustainable management of surface and underground resources resources in line with.
"As a demonstration of our commitment to our host communities, we have completed the construction of five solar-powered boreholes and overhead infrastructures which we are commissioning across the various locations of our host communities," he averred.
Assuring his team readiness to repositioning BORBDA to deliver on its founding objectives, he said his team's action would be guided by transparency, accountability, efficiency, environmental sustainability and legal compliance.
In his Goodwill message, the Commissioner of Police, Monday Agbonika represented by Assistant Commissioner of Police Abayomi Ajayi extolled BORBDA for creating the facilities for the police to do their jobs.
Abayomi said they are like Oliver twist that they will always ask for more and appeal to the authority to liaise with the DPO and provide logistics for them to do their jobs efficiently.
Stating how they were able to address the problem they meant on ground, the Executive Director, Agricultural Services Directorate Benin-Owena River Basin Development Authority (BORBDA), Hon. Johnson Oghuma, said God is the one that make everything possible.
He said with the help of God on their side, they were able to embark on many projects within 100 days in office and thank all those that came to grace the occasion.
