OPINION:Don Pedro And Beautiful Benin

TUESDAY FLAT OUT OPINION:Don Pedro And Beautiful Benin By Suyi Ayodele (Published in the Nigerian Tribune on Tuesday, December 30, 2025) https://tribuneonlineng.com/don-pedro-and-beautiful-benin/ A few years ago, a telecommunications outfit set out to erect a Base Transceiver Station (BTS) at the back of the palace of Oba of Benin. The coordinate fell on Alaka Street, directly behind the palace. Civil works commenced and completed without incident. The next phase involved assembling the tower components of the 75-metre mast. As the riggers worked, the structure began to take shape within hours. However, as the tower rose and became taller than any building in the surrounding area, trouble began.  A group of Benin Palace chiefs arrived and issued an immediate 'stop work' order. The riggers climbed down, and the company's management intervened. Explaining the directive, the chiefs said that the height of the tower would enable anyone on the tower to   see the in...

OPINION:Trump Must Finish What He Started

Image
Monday Lines 2 OPINION:Trump Must Finish What He Started By Lasisi Olagunju  (Published in the Nigerian Tribune on Monday, 29 December, 2025).  There is a Yoruba proverb for our insecurity and the external help we got last Thursday: Let the man see the snake; let the woman kill it. What matters is that the snake dies (Kí ọkùnrin rí ejò, kí obìnrin pa á; ohun tí ó ṣe pàtàkì ni pé kí ejò kú). The proverb is a lesson in pragmatism over pride. It is a proverb of necessity. When danger appears, pride must step aside. Whoever can strike should strike, so long the threat is neutralised. The proverb does not shame the man for failing to act as a man; it does not unduly glorify the woman for wielding the blow. It insists only on outcome: the danger must die. Slimy, slithering and deadly, terrorists are snakes. But Nigeria is an orísirísi country; a nation of assorted nations that lack consensus on everything, including on whether snakes deserve to die. Some view bandit snak...

OPINION:Gov Makinde, His Sons And His 'Friends'

Image
Monday Lines 1 OPINION:Gov Makinde, His Sons And His 'Friends' By Lasisi Olagunju  (Published in the Nigerian Tribune on Monday, 29 December, 2025).  “Beware the quiet man; for while others speak, he watches. And while others act, he plans. And when they finally rest, he strikes.” Not all quotes have the fortune of being attributed to an inventor; the above is one of them. Author known or author not known, the quote is fit for my use and I use it here, guardedly. Reticent Oyo State governor, Seyi Makinde, packed a punch last Tuesday with a media chat that landed like a cluster bomb. Exactly like America’s missile strike of Thursday, lethal fragments from Makinde’s verbal Tomahawk hit widely, leaving mortal marks on both intended and unintended targets. At a time when everyone ran for cover, the man stood apart and spoke as a rebel with a cause. He had enough firepower for everyone on his firing line. The whole country heard his words and took note of his allusions,...

OKPEBHOLO’S DARK CHRISTMAS IN EDO

Image
OKPEBHOLO’S DARK CHRISTMAS IN EDO By Daniel A. Noah Osa-Ogbegie, Esq. Christmas is traditionally a season of light, warmth, renewal, and collective hope. In Edo State, particularly in Benin City, this Christmas has arrived cloaked in darkness, both physical and moral. Streets that should glow with festive brilliance are subdued. Public buildings that ought to symbolise order and functionality stand in oppressive gloom. Offices that once worked seamlessly now stagger through the day in fits of darkness and silence. This is not an accident of fate. It is the direct outcome of governance driven by insecurity, bitterness, and a destructive obsession with undoing the legacy of a predecessor rather than advancing the welfare of the people. Governor Monday Okpebholo has, in a remarkably short time, demonstrated how fragile progress can be when leadership is animated by petty politics instead of policy intelligence. Nowhere is this failure more stark, more unforgivable, than in his...

My Man Of The Season

Image
TUESDAY FLAT OUT My Man Of The Season By Suyi Ayodele (Published in the Nigerian Tribune on Tuesday, December23, 2025) https://tribuneonlineng.com/my-man-of-the-season/ Christmas is two days away. This is a season of celebration. It is a time we celebrate relations, friends and those close to us. I have a family I want to celebrate this season. I stumbled on a video clip of a comedy show by the Waffi-born master of jokes, Bovi Ugboma. In the video, Bovi said that it is profitable to ‘curse’ the head of the family of my choice to attract political patronage. Bovi is a ‘bad’ boy. He was acerbic in his jokes as he made jokes of those who criticised the head of the family and got ‘compensated’. I don’t share that idea. This family is too fanciful to be ‘harassed’. It is also too powerful to be undermined. Ceteris paribus, our nearest future may as well be in the hands of the members of this family. Like they say in my place, this family has the scabies and the fingernails to sc...
