...Alleges Preliminary Facts Suggest Involvement Of Members Of  APC

As politicians across and outside Edo state condemned sporadic gunshots in ADC secretariat, a chieftain of the Labour Party (LP) and National Coordinator of the Liberal Progressive and Patriotic Members Congress (LPPMC), Dr. Kingsley Oghogho Okundaye, has condemned in strong terms the violent attack on the residence of the national leader of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), John Odigie Oyegun, in Benin City.

Oyegun, a former governor of Edo State, was hosting a crucial party meeting at his residence when gunmen allegedly stormed the premises, firing sporadically, injuring several individuals and vandalising vehicles parked within the compound.

The incident reportedly occurred shortly after the defection of Barrister Olumide Akpata to the ADC. Witnesses said the attack initially began at the ADC state secretariat before extending to Oyegun’s residence, where suspected thugs wreaked havoc.

In a statement signed by Okundaye and made available to journalists in Benin, he described the incident as not only an attack on a political party but “an attack on democracy itself.”

According to him, key dignitaries, including former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, Oyegun, ADC National Chief Whip Festus Igbinoba, National Legal Adviser Oserheimen Osunbor, and South-South Zonal Publicity Secretary Mabel Oboh, had left the venue before the attack occurred.

Okundaye attributed the violence to what he described as hostility surrounding Obi’s visit, noting that it marks the second time the ADC in Edo State has allegedly been targeted in violent attacks.

He further alleged that preliminary reports suggest possible involvement of members of the All Progressives Congress, although he acknowledged that investigations are ongoing.

“What happened at the Edo State secretariat of the ADC is not just an attack on a party — it is an attack on democracy itself,” he said.

“Politics must never be a theatre of violence, intimidation, or harassment. Political participation must be safe, organised, and lawful.”

The LP chieftain stressed that preparedness for political engagement is a responsibility, not an act of aggression, adding that while the party does not endorse violence, it will not tolerate intimidation.

“The safety of all citizens remains paramount, and security measures must remain strict at all levels, even during small opposition meetings,” he stated.

Okundaye called on the Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, and other security agencies to thoroughly investigate what he described as a heinous crime and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.

Reacting to the attack, Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo strongly condemned the recent attack on members of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), describing the incident as an internal party crisis that was taken too far.
