BENIN - Team Edo’s Swimming, Weightlifting, Kokowa contingent has delivered an extraordinary performance at the ongoing Niger Delta Games tagged Edo2026, harvesting gold medals and reaffirming the host state’s dominance.

Leading the charge was Peremobere Joy, who powered her way to gold in the Individual 100m Freestyle, showcasing speed, precision, and confidence from start to finish. In the longer distance event, Mary Dimeji demonstrated remarkable endurance and tactical strength to secure gold in the 400m Freestyle, thrilling spectators with a commanding performance.

The relay teams added further brilliance to Edo’s medal harvest. In the 4x400m Medley Relay (Male), the quartet of Albert Akintokun, Biloha Simeon, Precious Tissa, and Kolade Otunla combined strength and seamless coordination to capture gold in impressive fashion.

Equally outstanding was the 4x100m Freestyle Relay (Female) team of Nkonye Ziitaven, Peremobere Joy, Ifelouwa Fumilayo, and Lucky Ayeni, who swam with resilience and determination coming from behind to secure yet another gold medal for the state.

Capping off a remarkable outing, Kolade Otunla returned to the pool to claim gold in the 100m Backstroke, underlining his versatility and exceptional form in the competition.

In Weightlifting, Esther Adebola displayed exceptional strength and composure to clinch gold with a remarkable 65kg lift, earning well-deserved applause from spectators and officials alike.

Not to be outdone, Beauty Akpore delivered a sensational performance in the 53kg category, sweeping an incredible three gold medals in Weightlifting to further solidify Team Edo’s superiority.

Muritala Usman of Team Edo won in Traditional wrestling (Kokowa) defeating Bayelsa in the 70kg category. Muritala’s determination, technical discipline, and resilience were on full display as he powered his way to the top of the podium.

In Handball action on Monday, the Men’s team battled fiercely but fell short in a hard-fought contest against Delta State, losing 18–23. Despite the setback, the team showed grit and fighting spirit throughout the encounter.

The Women’s Handball team, however, delivered an emphatic response, defeating Ondo State 23–12 in a commanding performance that highlighted their coordination, tactical discipline, and hunger for victory.

In Boxing, Team Edo recorded another significant breakthrough as our 55kg boxer defeated his Delta counterpart to secure a place in the finals scheduled for tomorrow.

As of Day Four, Edo State leads the medal standings with 22 gold, 11 silver and 12 bronze medals — a total of 45 medals. Delta State follows with 14 gold, 19 silver and 11 bronze medals (44 total), while Bayelsa State sits third with 10 gold, 5 silver and 11 bronze medals (26 total).

These achievements once again demonstrate Team Edo’s resilience, depth, and unwavering commitment to excellence as we continue to strive not just to participate, but to dominate and win.
