Day Six of the second edition of the Niger Delta Games, tagged Edo 2026, will remain a defining moment in the annals of Edo sports history, as Team Edo shattered a 24-year jinx with a commanding and record-breaking performance.
Driven by the strategic direction and unwavering motivation of the Chairman of the Edo State Sports Commission, Hon. Amadin Enabulele, the state’s athletes delivered one of their most dominant outings yet, reinforcing Edo’s supremacy on the regional stage.
In wrestling, Peremobowei Abacha powered his way to gold in the 71kg male category. Alison Amakoro secured silver in the 65kg male division, while Jennifer Okhihie added another silver in the 65kg female category. Janet Odimalo rounded off the wrestling medals with bronze in the 61kg division.
Scrabble proved another goldmine for Edo. Clinton Imode emerged champion in the Male Singles event, clinching gold ahead of Emelike Samuel (Abia) and Perewer Edide (Bayelsa). In the Female Singles category, Delta’s Ekeruche Sophia claimed gold, with Emelike Roseline (Abia) taking silver and Ikoko Rhoda (Bayelsa) bronze.
The Male Doubles event further boosted Edo’s tally as Clinton Imode paired with Ejenakevbe Ese to capture gold, leaving Bayelsa with silver and Akwa Ibom with bronze. In the Female Doubles, Delta secured gold, Abia took silver, and Bayelsa claimed bronze.
Weightlifting once again showcased Edo’s dominance. ThankGod Sunday delivered a sensational performance in the 79kg category, claiming three gold medals. The 88kg male category added one gold and two silver medals to the state’s haul, while Peace Osagie swept three gold medals in the female 69kg division.
Under the technical expertise of Coach Williams Omoroghomwan—recently honoured with the January Best Staff Award by the Edo State Sports Commission—Edo’s weightlifting team secured an astonishing 17 gold medals out of the 27 available in the sport.
Since joining the Edo State Sports Council in February 2011 and rising to the rank of Assistant Chief Coach (Weightlifting), Omoroghomwan has consistently demonstrated professionalism, backed by strong academic credentials and international coaching certifications.
In team sports, the female volleyball team fought gallantly but settled for silver after a 3–1 defeat to Imo (25–11, 25–10, 20–25, 25–8). The male handball team also secured silver, finishing behind Imo.
As the medal table reflects, Edo leads convincingly with 50 gold, 30 silver, and 22 bronze medals — a total of 102 medals. Delta follows with 34 gold, 26 silver, and 31 bronze (91 total), while Bayelsa sits third with 23 gold, 20 silver, and 23 bronze (66 total).
Team Edo’s relentless pursuit of excellence continues to inspire confidence and pride across the state. With momentum firmly on their side, the journey toward even greater milestones at Edo 2026 remains bright and promising.
