UBTH CMD, Ize-Iyamu Outlines Major Achievements Within Six Months

The Chief Medical Director, University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), Prof. (Mrs.) Idia Nibokun Ize-Iyamu, has posited that, the management of the institution understand that healthcare is a fundamental right, and that many patients who come to them are among the most vulnerable in the society.
She made the statement in a press briefing on her achievements marking 180 days in Office, Benin city, Edo state, said since her assumption in office they have employed 401 new staff members.
The CMD added that, they have also improved security for staff, patients and visitors, and the construction of a Creche for children of staff with 80% completion supporting staff work-life balance.
" Amid debt disruption, and constrained resources, and having functioned at full operational capacity for only two of the six months under review, UBTH nevertheless delivered measurable and meaningful progress.
,"That progress was steered by the determination, discipline, and strategic focus of management, supported by the resilience and dedication of our staff, who refused to allow temporary constraints to define our trajectory," Ize-Iyamu stated.
According to her, she said as part
their corporate social responsibility and commitment to their host community, the hospital established an Indigent Patients Fund to assist the poor in accessing essential medical care.
Prof. Ize-Iyamu highlighted the community engagement," we conducted a four-day free medical outreach at the Oba Palace in Benin City from 9th to 12th December 2025, in celebration of the Pre-Igue Festival.
"This initiative provided free medical screenings, consultations, and medications to over 3,000 residents of Edo State, ensuring that quality care reached those who need it most.
"Beyond this outreach, UBTH continues to provide lifesaving interventions through free and subsidised programs, including cancer care, emergency Caesarean sections, and dialysis support under the Renewed Hope agenda for Health by the Federal Government ably led by Sen. Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR, President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
"We have aiso established am Indigent Patients Fund to assist the poor in accessing essential medical care, and we remain actively seeking partners and donors to expand the reach and impact of this fund.
"Through these initiatives, UBTH reaffirms its unwavering commitment to compassion, inclusion, and healthcare for all, ensuring that no one is left behind, regardless of circumstances.
"UBTH is no longer merely coping; it is growing, evolving, and raising the bar for patient care, training, and institutional excellence. Each milestone we achieve reflects not only progress but a steadfast commitment to the people we serve and the lives we touch. "
Responding, the NUJ chairman, Dr. Festus Alenkhe thanked the CMD for her initiatives for the huge achievements the teaching hospital had recorded within short periods in office.
Also, after the press briefing the management of the UBTH led by the CMD took the media on a tour to see the major breakthrough they have achieved within six months in office.
