In appreciation for the impressive performance and overall victory of Team Edo at the just concluded second Niger Delta Games in Benin, the Executive Chairman,Edo State Sports Commission Hon Amadin Desmond Enabulele has redeemed his pledge to reward coaches with outstanding performances at the games.

The Edo Sports Commission boss with his board members and management who are still basking in the euphoria of the second Niger Delta Games title win and for breaking 24 years jinx of major tournament title drought met with the 16 coaches that led team Edo to victory at the games and appreciated their hard work and with a surprise  package worth millions of Naira as reward for them.

Enabulele told the Coaches that he invited them to be appreciated and to evaluate the work they have done, and as well to begin strategic planning on how to improve. 

He, again congratulated them and hailed the resilience, discipline and unity of Team Edo which led to the state being crowned overall champions of the second edition of the Niger Delta Games, tagged ‘Edo 2026,' ending a 24-year wait for a major multi-sport tournament title.

At the meeting for a comprehensive review and evaluation team Edo's outing with the 17 coaches who represented Edo State at the just concluded 2nd edition of the Niger Delta Games, the chairman also challenged the coaches to produce new athletes that have never featured in any major tournament before the National Sports Festival in Enugu.

" I want to express my heartfelt appreciation to every one of our coaches for the dedication, teamwork, discipline, and selflessness demonstrated across all sporting discipline.

" Our overall victory at the games were a reflection of Your technical expertise and commitment to duty with a sense of purpose. Let me single out Weightlifting head coach Ikponmwosa Omoroghomwan for praise. The spontaneous cooperation and mutual understanding we have been preaching were seen in the camp of weightlifting and are clearly reflected in our performances and impressive medal haul.

" I particularly want to acknowledge our remarkable achievements in Weightlifting, Aquatics, Scrabble, Para Powerlifting, and Wrestling. 

These successes did not happen by chance; they are the result of structured planning, professional coaching, and the resilience of our athletes.

This victory belongs to every coach who worked tirelessly behind the scenes, refining techniques,boosting morales  , and instilling the winning mentality that defined Team Edo throughout the competition.

"However, while we celebrate, we must not relax. I emphasized during our session that preparation for upcoming tournaments must begin immediately. Like the Oliver Twist,we are asking for more. We are no longer going to be treated as underdogs in any regional and national championship after now. So we must work harder to sustain the tempo and produce new Talents in our next national outing.

At the second Niger Delta Games,Edo topped the medal table with an impressive haul of 52 gold, 34 silver and 25 bronze medals, amassing a total of 111 medals to surge past traditional powerhouses, Delta and defending champions Bayelsa in the keenly contested week-long regional sports fiesta which ended on Thursday, February 26,2026 at the Samuel Ogbemudia stadium in Benin.

The triumph marks Edo’s first major tournament victory since hosting and winning the 2002 National Sports Festival, breaking a title drought that  lasted for over two decades

Over 3,000 athletes from nine states competed in 17 sports at the second Niger Delta Games, with Edo delivering standout performances in weightlifting, athletics, boxing,, wrestling, Scrabble sand swimming.
