EDOHERMA Seeks Strategic Partnership's To Strengthen Healthcare Regulation In Edo

The Edo State Health Regulation and Monitoring Agency (EDOHERMA) is intensifying efforts to build strong institutional partnerships with professional bodies, government agencies and regulatory councils as part of measures to strengthen healthcare regulation and improve service delivery in the state.

Speaking in an interview in Benin City, the Chief Executive Officer of the Agency, Adesuwa Urhoghide, said collaboration at both state and national levels is critical for the effective implementation of the agency’s mandate.

Urhoghide noted that as a newly established regulatory body, EDOHERMA is focused on laying a solid operational foundation through partnerships with key stakeholders across the health sector.

According to her, engagements such as courtesy visits from professional associations provide opportunities for the agency to introduce its regulatory mandate, clarify operational standards and build cooperation with healthcare professionals

"These engagements help ensure that practitioners clearly understand regulatory requirements, comply with professional standards and support the agency’s efforts to eliminate quackery in the health sector,” she said.

She further explained that EDOHERMA has also begun reaching out to relevant Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) at both the state and federal levels to establish frameworks for inter-agency collaboration.

Urhoghide noted that effective health sector regulation often requires coordination with several institutions responsible for areas such as environmental health, fire safety, security, professional licensing, health insurance, hygiene standards, public signages, physical planning and local government oversight.

According to her, building such partnerships will help eliminate duplication of responsibilities, resolve operational bottlenecks and improve overall regulatory efficiency within the healthcare system.

"Many regulatory functions cut across multiple agencies. Strengthening collaboration helps ensure that responsibilities are clearly defined, operational challenges are addressed quickly, and service delivery across the health sector improves,” she said.

Urhoghide reiterated that the establishment of EDOHERMA forms part of a broader reform aimed at separating regulatory responsibilities from policy-making functions previously handled by the Edo State Ministry of Health.

She explained that the reform allows the Ministry to concentrate on policy formulation while EDOHERMA focuses on enforcing regulatory standards, monitoring healthcare facilities and strengthening accountability in healthcare delivery across the state.

The CEO assured that the agency would remain committed to implementing its statutory mandate while maintaining close engagement with stakeholders and the public.

Urhoghide also expressed appreciation to the Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, for initiating what she described as a forward-looking reform designed to strengthen healthcare governance and improve standards within the state’s health system.

She said the reform represents a strategic step towards ensuring safer, better regulated and more accountable healthcare services for residents of Edo State.
