Amadin Desmond Enabulele, Executive Chairman of the Edo State Sports Commission, has praised the leadership of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN), headed by Chief Tonobok Okowa, for selecting Benin City to host the inaugural Golden League Series as Team Nigeria prepares for a busy athletics season.

In a statement issued on Monday by his media aide, Edoko Wilson Edoko, Enabulele said Edo’s growing reputation as a prime destination for major national competitions reinforces its status as a sports powerhouse in Nigeria.

“We must commend His Excellency, the sports-loving Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, for fostering an environment where sports can thrive. His commitment to maintaining top-notch facilities and providing resources for youth empowerment through sports has been exemplary,” he said.

Enabulele noted that the governor’s sustained investment in sports development is already delivering results, positioning Edo as a preferred venue for both national and international tournaments.

“We recently celebrated our victory at the second edition of the Niger Delta Games tagged Edo2026, where we secured 52 gold medals, and now we have this exciting event,” he added.

He further stressed that the competition’s official listing on the World Athletics calendar will boost economic activity while motivating athletes and coaches to strive for excellence.

The two-day meet is scheduled for March 2–3 at the iconic Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, with no fewer than 412 athletes set to compete in 28 events across the men’s and women’s categories, promising a thrilling display of talent.

National Team athletes currently in camp in Asaba are expected to use the Golden League Series to assess their training progress.

The prestigious 100m and 400m races for men and women will headline the four premium events, with cash prizes awaiting winners. Eight classic events — including the women’s 100m hurdles, men’s 110m hurdles, men’s triple jump, javelin, women’s 800m, men’s 1,500m, women’s long jump and the high jump — will also feature financial incentives for participants.
