Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, on Tuesday hosted the victorious Team Edo following their historic performance at the 2nd Niger Delta Games, tagged Edo 2026.
The reception at the New Festival Hall of Government House brought together senior government officials, including Deputy Governor, Rt Hon. Dennis Idahosa, Secretary to the State Government Barr. Musa Ikhilor, Head of Service Anthony Okungbowa, commissioners, and other top functionaries.
Governor Okpebholo lauded the athletes and officials for fulfilling his earlier pledge that Edo State would not only host but also win the games. He singled out the Executive Chairman of the Edo State Sports Commission, Hon. Amadin Desmond Enabulele, for his exemplary leadership.
“I warmly extend my heartfelt appreciation to Hon. Amadin Desmond Enabulele for this remarkable achievement. I had confidence in your capacity when I appointed you, and you have exceeded expectations,” the governor said.
Reiterating his commitment to reward the athletes, Governor Okpebholo confirmed the N30 million prize promised prior to the tournament. “You have dominated the medals table and made Edo very proud. We celebrate because we hosted and we won,” he said, while assuring continued investment in sports development and talent grooming for national and international competitions.
He also acknowledged the dedication of the coaches: “Our coaches are the real heroes. To the athletes, we will continue to harness your talents and provide the resources to enhance your winning abilities. I see future Olympians among you.”
In his remarks, Hon. Enabulele expressed gratitude to the governor for his unwavering support and described the reception as a strong motivation for the Sports Commission, coaches, and athletes. He emphasized that the administration’s strategic investment in sports infrastructure and grassroots development has begun to yield results, with the Niger Delta Games victory ending a 24-year wait for a major tournament title since Edo’s last National Sports Festival win in 2002.
Enabulele revealed that Governor Okpebholo’s backing during preparations — including extended training camps and provision of essential resources was pivotal to the team’s success. He proudly announced that Team Edo clinched the overall championship with 111 medals: 52 gold, 34 silver, and 25 bronze.
The Sports Commission chairman recognized several standout athletes across swimming, weightlifting, scrabble, and athletics, underscoring the collective effort that delivered the historic triumph. He formally presented Team Edo and the Niger Delta Games trophy to the governor, symbolizing Edo State’s return to the pinnacle of regional sporting excellence.
