National Assembly Summons  Ribadu, Service Chiefs Over  Insecurity

The House of Representatives has summoned National Security Adviser (NSA), Nuhu Ribadu, and the nation’s service chiefs to appear before lawmakers over the worsening security situation across Nigeria.

The resolution was passed during plenary on Tuesday following the adoption of a motion sponsored by Hon. Sulaiman Gumi, who represents the Gummi/Bukkuyum Federal Constituency of Zamfara State.

The lawmakers expressed concern over the continued wave of killings, kidnappings, bandit attacks, terrorism and other violent crimes across the country despite repeated assurances from security agencies and the Federal Government.

The summons comes amid growing public outrage over recent attacks on schools in Oyo and Borno states, where dozens of pupils, teachers and school workers were abducted by armed groups.

The development also comes weeks after President Bola Tinubu assured Nigerians that his administration was working to secure the release of abducted schoolchildren and teachers still being held captive by kidnappers.

In a personally signed statement issued on May 27 to mark Children’s Day, Tinubu acknowledged the pain of families whose children and loved ones remain in captivity.

“As we mark this special day, which coincides with Eid-el-Kabir, some Nigerian children and their teachers in Oyo and Borno should be with their families, but are being held captive by criminals. Some children have been forced into fear. Some parents cannot join today’s celebration because their hearts are set on one prayer: ‘Bring our children home.”

“To those children, their parents, and their teachers, I say this as a father and your President: you are not forgotten. You are not abandoned,” Tinubu had said.

The President further assured affected families that his government would continue efforts to rescue the victims and bring their captors to justice.

“To the families grieving and despondent, your government will not turn your pain into ceremony. We will continue to work until children taken from their homes, schools, and communities are returned safely, and until those who profit from this cruelty are brought to justice,” he added.

Tinubu also disclosed that he had directed security agencies to intensify intelligence-led rescue operations and strengthen protection around schools, particularly in vulnerable communities.

“I have also directed the strengthening of school protection measures in high-risk areas. This will include updated school vulnerability mapping, closer coordination between state governments and security commands, rapid response links between schools and local security units, and stronger community-based early warning systems,” the President stated.

Despite the assurances, insecurity has continued to spread across several parts of the country.

On May 15, armed attackers invaded Community High School, Ahoro-Esinele, in Oyo State, abducting a school principal, teachers and dozens of pupils. One teacher was reportedly shot dead during the attack, while another abducted teacher was later killed by the kidnappers.

The attack triggered protests among teachers in Ogbomoso and renewed calls for improved security in schools.

On the same day, armed men also attacked Mussa Primary School and Junior Day Secondary School in Askira-Uba Local Government Area of Borno State, abducting several pupils.

The incidents reignited fears over a resurgence of mass school kidnappings, particularly in northern Nigeria where schools have repeatedly come under attack by terrorists and armed groups.

Reacting to the attacks, the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) described them as “barbaric and inhuman,” warning that continued attacks on schools could force teachers across the country to withdraw their services.

The House of Representatives’ decision to summon the NSA and service chiefs is expected to place fresh pressure on security agencies to explain measures being taken to address the worsening security crisis and secure the release of victims still being held by kidnappers and terrorists.
