Iyanomo Leadership Crisis: Edo Security Team Deployed To Restore Peace

The Edo State Police Command has deployed a team of security men to Iyanomo Community in Ikpoba Okah local government area of Edo State to restore peace and order following the renewed leadership crisis in the Community.

The leadership crisis over who becomes the Odionwere of Iyanomo Community broke out on the 13th of January 2026 leading to the destruction of properties worth millions of naira with residents deserting the area for fear of being killed.

In its determination to restore peace and order in the State, the Edo State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) ASP Eno Ikoedem along with the deployed security team embarked on an operation show of force around the community to register their presence.

Speaking to journalists on the operation, PPRO said following a series of reports on violent attack in Iyanomo Community, the Commissioner of Police Edo State CP Monday Agbonika deployed an intervention team to restore peace.

She noted that the team is not leaving the community soon until total peace is restored, urging the people who deserted the community for fear of being killed to return as the team is on ground to restore law and order as well as maintain peace.

"We are here in Iyanomo Community to ensure peace and the security men will remain here until normalcy is restored. The team is complementing the investigation team that has already started investigating the violent crime committed and will apprehend the perpetrators of the act and ensure they face the law.

"This is not a temporary show of force but a move determined to restore lasting peace. We call on the residence of Iyanomo Community who have been displaced by the crisis to return as the security team is here in the community to restore peace and harmony", she concluded. 

Speaking to journalists on the cause of the crisis in the Community, Pa Robinson Izekor second in command to the late Odionwere said who becomes the Odionwere of the community is the cause of the crisis.

He noted that one Felix Ediowe who refused to assume the Odionwere position in 2021 suddenly indicated interest and the community kicked against it and it led to the crisis.

Pa Izekor added that when he refused in 2021, the position was given to one Wilfred Odegie who is now late. He said that he is second in command to the late Odionwere. "After his death, I am supposed to takeover the leadership of the community as the Odionwere but Felix Ediowe showed up and indicated interest, marking the beginning of troubles and crisis in the community". 

Another resident of the community, Elder Fred Omo-Edigie said Felix Ediowe and Osawonyi Ikorogie are the cause of the crisis as they led suspected cultists to unleash mayhem, shooting sporadically to cause fear and panic.

He accused Osawonyi Ikorogie of cultism and cult related activities, he noting that he belongs to Eiye Confraternity and has used his members to terrorize the people of the Community.

"From January 13 we were living in fear until the police stepped in June 25th 2026 when Osawonyi was arrested by Edo State Police Command leading to the recovery of cartridges, vehicle plate numbers, clothes, hard drugs, guns and many other incriminating evidence".

The resident thanked the commissioner of police, the governor of Edo State, the Oba of Benin for trying to ensure peace in the community and appeal to relevant authority to bring the crisis to an end and ensure 
Osawonyi face justice.
