Edo Govt Renovates 65 PHCs, Recruits 1,000 Health Workers

Commissioner for Arts, Culture and Creative Economy, Hon. Chris Okaeben, has asserted that, the Edo   carnival that is coming up in December this year will be organised to enhance to unity of Edo people, build trust on the people and attract investment to the state.


Chris Okaeben made the statements  on Wednesday in Benin City while speaking at the state government’s monthly press briefing usually organise by the Commissioner for Information and Strategic, Prince Kassim Afegbua.


Okaeben said the governor of Edo state, Senator Monday Okpebholo as a man that believe and value the rich cultural heritage of the state has directed the Ministry to put everything in place in order to ensure a successful Edo cultural carnival.

" We have in our calendar every year is an annual event. The Edo first is still very much in place and the Edo Caninval which will be coming up towards the end of December, which is the Caninval that supposed to enhance the unity of our people, build the trust of our people and attract investment to our very dear state," Okaeben explained.


Also speaking, the Special Adviser to Governor Monday Okpebholo on Health, Dr Andrew Iyamu, said the Edo State Government has made malaria testing and treatment free in all government hospitals across the state as part of measures to improve access to healthcare.


 

Andrew Iyamu said the governor approved the policy to ensure that residents could access malaria treatment without financial constraints.


He said the administration had also renovated 65 Primary Health Centres (PHCs) across the 18 local government areas and 35 Secondary Health Centres, while efforts were being intensified to improve healthcare delivery and tackle substandard health facilities, quackery and fake drugs.


Iyamu, who was flanked by the Commissioner for Information and Strategic, Prince Kassim Afegbua; Commissioner for Arts, Culture and Creative Economy, Hon. Chris Okaeben; and the Executive Secretary of the Edo State Drugs and Health Commodities Management Agency, Princess Kenny Okojie.



“Any government hospital you go, you don't pay for malaria testing and treatment. It is free. The arrangement is for two years, after two years, the policy will be reviewed.


“We have renovated a total of 65 Primary Health Care Centres across the 18 local governments, a total of 35 Secondary Health Centres.
“The Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has also recruited about 1,000 health workers. The Eneghede General Hospital, which has been moribund for 19 years, has been renovated. Go to the doctors’ quarters; there is ongoing renovation of the doctors’ quarters," Iyamu stated.



More so, the Executive Secretary of the Edo State Drugs and Health Commodities Management Agency, Princess Kenny Okojie, said the state government had renovated all its drug warehouses constructed during the administration of the late General Samuel Ogbemudia, which had become dilapidated.

She said the cardinal point of the agency is to ensure that they have an affordable medicines for the citizens, and to  ensure the medicines were talking on high standard quality.

She said  agency would be supervised by the pharmaceutical Council of Nigeria and the National Agency for Food and Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC) that agency is highly regularised.



 Okojie's said the government is working with Chinese investors to be able to produce drugs for local use and sales to neighboring states  .

“We have renovated the drug warehouses that were built during the time of General Samuel Ogbemudia. 



The state government is working with Chinese investors to produce drugs in Edo State.  We are also to supply drugs to the private sector.
Our plans is the elimination of fake drugs and middlemen.”

Okojie's said they had also been able to digitalize the system and have a software that run the entire warehouse.

Informing the media about the monthly press briefing, Commissioner for Information and Strategic, Prince Kassim Afegbua, said Edo state government is committed in providing tangible infrastructures for the people of the state.

He blamed previous governments for the cause of substandard roads  constructed in the state.
