OPINION: Befriending Bandits

TUESDAY FLAT OUT Befriending Bandits By Suyi Ayodele (Published in the Nigerian Tribune on Tuesday, September 23, 2025) https://tribuneonlineng.com/befriending-bandits/amp/ The photograph is graphic. The message is obvious. The semiotics are unmistaken. A bandit in military fatigue sits comfortably. On his lap is an AK-47 assault rifle. Around his neck are various communication gadgets. His look betrays his hubris. He is a man of power! His confidence shows who is in charge. It is audacity in its illiterate form! Another man in a native attire bends towards the bandit. He smiles sheepishly. He holds a handset, in a very suggestive manner. The caption tells the entire story: “Nigerian Government Official ‘Exchange Contact’ with Bandits After a 'Peace Deal’ Meeting in Subuwa LGA in Katsina State.” When the junior rival wife to one’s mother is older and more powerful, one is advised to call her mother (tí orogún ìyá eni bá ju ìyá eni lo, ìyá làá pèé). This ancient wisdom i...

Monday Lines  Every Democracy ‘Murders Itself’ By Lasisi Olagunju  (Published in the Nigerian Tribune on Monday, 22 September, 2025). In 'Jokes and Targets' by Christie Davies, a Soviet journalist interviews a Chukchi man: "Could you tell us briefly how you lived before the October revolution?"  "Hungry and cold."  "How do you live now?"  "Hungry, cold, and with a feeling of deep gratitude."  This sounds like Nigeria's malaria victims thanking mosquitoes for their love and care. Between democracy and its opposite, reality has blurred the lines.  Last week, a group of White House pool reporters travelled with President Donald Trump on Air Force One as he returned from his U.K. state visit. At the beginning of the journey, actor Trump sauntered into the rear section of the plane, the traditional part for the press. He granted an interview and ended it with a morbid wish: “Fly safely. You know why I say that? Because I’m on t...
