The Minority Whip and member representing Orhionmwon East Constituency at the Edo State House of Assembly, Hon Osamwonyi Evbaguehita Atu, Tuesday awarded scholarships to Ten (20) Orhionmwon indigenes to study any Course of their choice in Benson Idahosa University (BIU), one the leading private Universities in Nigeria.
Speaking at the event, Hon. Atu said the scholarship is a complete package covering textbooks, accommodation and school fees, noting that no financial commitment is expected from parents and guardians.
He said there is a need for parents and guardians to play supervisory roles by ensuring that their children and wards not only attend classes, but show seriousness in their academic work.
The Lawmaker said the beneficiaries were carefully selected through a screening exercise by professionals so as to ensure that only the qualified indigent candidates made the list.
According to Hon. Atu, the scholarship scheme was borne out of his belief in building positive prospects for the future generation through investment in capacity building, especially education and skills.
He asserted that his goal is to reduce and possibly eradicate illiteracy in Orhionmwon East, and also to encourage every child in the Constituency to attend school.
"My continuous support for the youth to further their education will, no doubt, help prepare them for the future,” Hon. Atu noted.
Commenting on the development, State Chairman and Secretary of the All Progressives Congress, Col. David Imuse and Engr. Lawrence Okah, respectively, and other leaders of the Edo APC, described Atu as a compassionate leader with a heart of gold.
They noted that the scholarship scheme is a laudable investment in the future of the younger generation within the Orhionmwon Local Government Area, urging the lawmaker to sustain the programme.
