Edo State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Samuel Alli, has drew battle line against unregistered Medical practitioners in the state
He also re-emphasized that, on no account should any unregistered medical practitioner operate freely without proper registration with the state Ministry of Health.
Dr. Alli who disclosed this during press briefing at the Conference Hall of the State Ministry of Health in Benin City, said the regulation includes registration of all providers of healthcare and ensuring adherence to acceptable medical standards.
He said, “The scope covers hospitals, clinics and medical centres, community pharmacies and patent medicine stores, dental hospitals and clinics, eye hospitals/centres and clinics, physiotherapy centres, nursing homes, diagnostic centres, medical laboratories, maternities, mortuaries, funeral homes, embalmment centres and traditional and alternative medicine practitioners.
“On 3 August 2023, we commenced the war against quackery. So far, a total of one hundred and eight (108) facilities have been sealed. Out of these, Thirty Three (33) were medical laboratories, Ten (10) were hospitals, Eleven (11) were nursing homes, Twenty Six (26) were community pharmacies and Twenty Eight (28) were patent medicine stores.
“The reasons for which the facilities were sealed include unregistered facilities, unsafe medical practices, practicing beyond approved scope and use of unqualified personnel, emphasized that the Ministry owe our residents the responsibility of being the front leaders in upholding the law and abiding by the rules we all laid down.
“Though, this has been the practice for many years, we would no longer tolerate this. Therefore, all existing and intending healthcare facilities must seek and get approval from the Ministry of Health before commencing operation.
“If you own/operate an existing unregistered healthcare facility or intend to own/operate a healthcare facility, we urge you to come and seek registration with the Ministry of Health. We are now registering all healthcare facilities digitally with GIS mapping. If your facility is not on our portal and found to be operating, we will have no choice but to seal it after a warning.”
Going further, Dr. Samuel Alli added that the Ministry have found several unsafe practices which constitute danger to the people of Edo State. Such practices like unsafe abortion, use of expired medicines, improper waste disposal, unclean and improper environment, ill-equipped theatres, will no longer be tolerated.
