Edo Guber:  NCSSR Laments Of Fake News, Vote Trading

The Nigeria Civil Society Situation Room (NCSSR), on the 2024, Edo state governorship election, has asserted that, situation room Observers reported widespread instances of blatant vote buying and selling across several polling units, despite the huge presence of security personnel.

Addressing Journalists in Benin city, on behalf of its members in a press conference, the Co-Convener of NCSSR, Mimidoo Achakpa, lamented the widespread of fake news.

Achakpa, said the spread of fake news which has contributed to confusion among voters and heightened tension at several polling locations.


He posited," Situation Room observers reported widespread instances of blatant vote buying and selling across several polling units, despite the huge presence of security personnel.

" The price of votes ranged from 5,000 to ₦10,000 per voter in several locations, including PUO8 and 09 Ward 2, Owan-East LGA; PU 02 Ward 2, Etsako-West LGA; and several polling units in Egor, Oredo and Owan-West LGAs. 

"In some cases, voters were also induced with food items such as bread and “Gala”. The election environment has been further charged by the spread of fake news, which has contributed to confusion among voters and heightened tension at several polling locations. 

"According to report of a member 
organization — Centre for Democracy and Development (CDD West Africa), there were three major fake news, propagated at the eve of the election, largely affecting the three major political parties. 



"The Situation Room observed and commend voters for their peaceful conduct throughout the process, and urge them to remain so. 

"The Situation Room will continue to observe developments, as they unfold and provide a comprehensive report after the polls.

 "We urge all stakeholders, including INEC, security agencies, and political parties, to ensure the smooth conduct of the election and to refrain from any acts that could undermine the integrity of the process."

He said NCSSR noted that some units in areas such as; Egor, Oredo, Ikpoba Okha, Etsako West , Owan West and Esan Central LGAs experienced widespread delays due to the heavy rainfall in these locations.

The press conference also witnessed questions and answers from journalists and international and local Observers that grace the event.
